Terms of Service
Effective date: July 31, 2026
ClassNotes is a free note-taking web app for students, made and run by one person — a student — as a hobby project ("we," "us," or "ClassNotes"). These Terms are the agreement between you and us when you use the site at jacksonvel.com/notes and the app at jacksonvel.com/notes/app (together, the "Service"). We've tried to write them so a normal person can read them. Please do.
1. Accepting these Terms
By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you don't agree, please don't use ClassNotes.
2. Who can use ClassNotes
You must be at least 13 years old to use ClassNotes. The Service is not for children under 13, and we don't knowingly allow them to sign up. By using ClassNotes, you confirm you're 13 or older.
If you're under 18, you should get a parent or guardian's permission before using ClassNotes. If you're a parent or guardian, you're agreeing to these Terms on behalf of your student.
3. Your account
You sign up with a username, password, and email address. Your email is used only to send password-reset links — please don't use your full real name as your username, and pick something that doesn't reveal who you are. You're responsible for keeping your password and email account safe and for everything that happens under your account. Signing up may require an invite code.
Please read this — it matters: if you forget your password, we email a one-time reset link to the address on your account, so keep that email account secure and use a real address you can access. If you lose access to both your password and that email, we may be unable to recover your account and you could lose access to it and its notes. Use the built-in Backup button often to keep your own copy of your notes.
4. Acceptable use
When using ClassNotes, please don't:
- Break the law, or use ClassNotes to harm, harass, bully, or deceive anyone.
- Try to access other people's accounts, notes, or data.
- Probe, overload, or attack the Service, or try to break or get around its security or limits.
- Scrape, resell, or bulk-extract the Service, or hammer it with bots.
- Upload malware, or content you don't have the right to upload.
- Use the Service to cheat in a way that breaks your school's rules — that's on you (see below).
We may suspend or close accounts that misuse the Service.
5. Recording lectures and school rules — your responsibility
ClassNotes has optional voice dictation and photo-to-notes features. Before you record a teacher, record a class, or photograph a whiteboard, textbook, or someone else's work, make sure you're allowed to:
- Many schools and teachers require permission before you record audio or take photos in class. Ask first.
- Some places have laws about recording people without their consent. You're responsible for following the recording and privacy laws where you are.
- You're responsible for following your school's rules on notes, recording, and academic honesty.
You, not ClassNotes, are responsible for what you record, photograph, and upload, and for having the right to do it.
6. AI features
When you tap the AI button to clean up notes, or use photo-to-notes, the note text or photo you choose is sent to a third-party AI service (Anthropic's Claude API) to do the processing, and is handled as described in our Privacy Policy. This only happens when you actively use those features. AI output can be wrong, incomplete, or made up — always check it against your real class material. Voice dictation is handled by your own browser's speech feature, not our servers (details in the Privacy Policy).
7. Your notes belong to you
The notes, assignments, flashcards, and other content you create are yours. You give us permission to store and process them only as needed to run the Service for you, as described in our Privacy Policy. We don't sell your data, show ads, or share your notes with anyone except the AI and hosting providers needed to run the app. You're responsible for what you put into ClassNotes.
8. Not professional or academic advice
ClassNotes is a study tool. It is not a teacher, tutor, or professional advisor, and nothing it produces — including AI-cleaned notes, summaries, flashcards, and quiz answers — is guaranteed to be accurate or complete. Don't rely on it as your only source, and don't treat it as official academic, legal, medical, or other professional advice. Your grades and your work are your responsibility.
9. The Service is provided "as is" — back up your work
ClassNotes is free and built by one student in their spare time. We try to keep it running and to protect your data, but we can't promise it will always be available, error-free, or that your data won't be lost. We may change, pause, or shut down the Service at any time, and data can be lost through bugs, outages, or account problems. Use the Backup button regularly to keep your own copy of your notes. Don't store anything in ClassNotes that you can't afford to lose.
10. Deleting your account
You can delete your account anytime from Settings — this deletes your account and all of its data. You can also just stop using ClassNotes. We may suspend or end your access if you break these Terms or misuse the Service. Some sections — the disclaimers, limitation of liability, and intellectual property — keep applying after your account ends.
11. Our intellectual property
The ClassNotes name, app, design, and code are owned by us or our licensors. We give you a personal, limited, non-exclusive permission to use the Service for your own studying under these Terms. That doesn't let you copy, resell, or build a competing product from it. You keep ownership of the notes you create.
12. It's free, and what "Pro" means
ClassNotes is free to use. A few features are marked Pro — study plans, podcasts, practice tests, and exporting flashcards to Anki or CSV. Pro isn't for sale right now: it's unlocked with a code, not bought. We don't ask for or store card or payment details, there's no subscription, and nothing auto-renews and nothing bills you.
If Pro is ever sold, we'll show you the price, what's included, and how to cancel before you agree to anything, and we won't charge you without your agreement.
13. Disclaimer of warranties
To the fullest extent allowed by law, the Service is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, whether express, implied, or statutory. We disclaim all implied warranties, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, secure, or error-free, or that any note, AI output, or feature is accurate, complete, or suitable for your purposes. Some places don't allow certain warranty exclusions, so some of these may not apply to you.
14. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent allowed by law, ClassNotes and its operator will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, notes, grades, or academic outcomes, arising from or related to your use of (or inability to use) the Service — including reliance on AI output and any lost or deleted notes. To the fullest extent allowed by law, our total liability for all claims relating to the Service is limited to US $50. Some places don't allow certain liability limits, so some of this may not apply to you, and nothing here limits liability that can't be limited by law.
15. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules, and by applicable U.S. federal law. Any dispute will be handled in the state or federal courts located in Kentucky, unless the law gives you the right to bring it somewhere else.
16. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms as ClassNotes grows or the law changes. When we do, we'll update the "Effective date" above, and for meaningful changes we'll try to give notice in the app. Continuing to use the Service after changes take effect means you accept the updated Terms.
